Unlike muni bonds, all of the interest is fully taxable at your ordinary income tax rates. As I write this post, TBM and the Vanguard Tax-Exempt ETF ( VTEB) have somewhat similar durations (6.6 and 5.5) and yields (4.3% to 3.2%.) If I adjust that 4.3% for my 37% tax bracket, it's really a yield of less than 3.0%.

Also, this is the worst the bond market has been in at least 50 years. Its incredibly anomalous, nearly a 5 Standard Deviation drop on the 20 year bond. And yet unless all the bond fund held is 20+ year bonds (which a Total fund won’t), the S&P 500 stock index is likely down as much or more than that bond fund.
