I'm playing with my kid (he uses bluetooth headphones and I'm on wired) and during our game, his game audio will cut out. We use the in game voice chat and he's still able to hear me, but nothing else (no effects, music, etc).

FFXIV doesn't do real-time checking of which audio device you have engaged. I start FFXIV so it plays through my speakers normally (actually a few notches down) and then plug in my headset for Discord. I still hear the game, but there's no way it drowns out my group.
