You can place them in corners of foundations AND sideways as beams (the catwalk piece seems to be missing, but we have Quarter Ceilings & walls to help with that) I haven't tested pillars much myself (only built one) but I do believe all foundation pieces give support for 4 tiles out now, instead of just 2.
