If you don't the locking lug will be pushed up thru the top of the bolt binding against the top of the receiver. You may also need to wiggle the bolt handle a bit with a little backwards pressure. Once the bolt is out, it comes apart by driving out a few pins. When you put the bolt back together put the handle in first.
