Is the carbs date close enough to the build date of the car (and engine) to be considered normative practice or do I need to commence hunting for a later dated carb for the car to be "correct"? That date is fine for your car. For a correct carb date, you need to look for 3 digit that start with a 5. So if your car's birthday for instance March 2nd, 1965 then you want a carb dated 531 (5=1965, 3=March, & 1=1st week) or earlier. If you are concerned with NCRS then you look for something up to 6 month earlier than the build date is normally acceptable.The carb was installed at the St Louis plant so a typical correct carb would be dated about 2-4 weeks prior to the cars assembly date. What it is NOT is a 715 Holley Cobra LeMans carb.
