The bard is a really good class to play if you're not alone, though its not super balanced with calamity, if you want to be able to fight things alone though definitley magic. As I recall magic was just the best one to use against most calamity bosses in general and they're usually harder than the others~.

Some work just fine (like the Thorium mod), others need you to downgrade your Terraria version and some are simply unplayable in Multiplayer. Without being able to port forward you might have a problem playing Multiplayer in the first place though, I'm not sure if there's any mod that makes port forwarding unnecessary.

I host the server and have not crashed. The most recent crashes were all due to Leviathan spawning during the Anahita boss fight, but there was 2 other crashes beforehand that I believe must have been from something else. Calamity’s mod configuration settings allows you to artificially increase boss health. I would recommend increasing by about 75% per extra player (2 players are 175, 3 makes 250, etc.) Health does scale in multiplayer, but it is so insignificant that it really doesn't matter. To do so, one of you has to go Main Menu -> Multiplayer -> Host & Play to start the server, and when server is up, other has to go press Join via Steam, then Right Click your name, and press Join Game. As long as you have the same version of tModLoader installed and the same mods up to date, you should just be able to host and join through steam (Through the Terraria client). As for recommended mods, some of the main content adding ones seem to be Thorium, Calamity and Tremor, and all are compatible with each other.If tModLoader doesn't work, of course check for the ports 7777 to be opened assuming your using the default port. The mods should auto download and enable/disable when attempting to join a server, but Tmodloader usually crashes when entering.
