You could just have that trans freshened up to handle new motor.
The S motors are rated at 180 HP @ 3400 and 360 ft/lbs @ 1800 . However to add some confusion, the is a little * beside the rating for the 97 and 98 years for both the F and S engines. Street tires, stock type stall, and street driving will be fine. It's the shock to the rear ends that hurt them.its not really how much "it" can handle but how much you can. Ive raced circle track cars with 400+hp with Muncie trannys and theve been just fine. it really comes down to how you treat it, drop clutching speed shifting, you can break it with a mear 300. just treat it nice and you should have no problem with 400-600hpAdd up all those charges and compare to what a new set of rods cost. For me it was cheaper to buy new rods then to try and rebuild the old ones. I have a 109 with a stock crank and rods with 4 billet caps and a girdle. The motor made 525 rear wheel horsepower @ 21 psi through a TH400 trans, and ran a 6.455 @ 105 in the 1/8 mile @ 24.5 psi. I'm guessing 575-600 at the rear wheels. only mods to the rods were arp rod bolts. Polished crank.

A rebuild with good & extra clutches will result in 600-700 crank hp. Some more easy mods and you can build them to hold well over 1000hp.

In most cases the rods themselves don't fail the bolts do.
