When the engine first comes on, it will run in series hybrid mode where it idles around 1500 rpm and loads the engine up with the generator to preheat the catalytic converter. It is noisier when doing this. The vehicle won't start if the battery is under -22f/-30c. that is an important distinction since the battery in inside the vehicle, well insulated, etc. It takes a prolonged amount of time sitting out in very cold weather to fully cold soak the vehicle and get the battery internals below -22f.
