For my 12 job run, I ran: Vaan - Shikari/RDM Ashe - Foe/WHM Balthier - Machinist/Uhlan Penelo - Monk/Bushi Basch - Knight/Time Fran - Archer/BLM. I tried to put classes that made sense lore wise for the characters but there's so many different combos you can use. Monk/BLM is popular, Shikari/WHM, RDM/Archer.

Vaan can play all class as main - very early beginning, Shikari might not be the best fit, still do a decent job. Monk is a really valuable start, knowing that you will do shit against monster having high magical defense. Uhlan is one of the strongest physical DPS, even early.
